この度POSTでは、日本を代表する写真家森山大道と、レバノン出身の写真家Avo Tavitian（アヴォ・タヴィティアン）による『Avo Tavitian, Daido Moriyam / LOS ANGELES X SHINJUKU』の展覧会を開催いたします。

本書は2024年末、同出版社の編集者兼キュレーターのMaya Ishiwata（マヤ・イシワタ）と、ノルウェー人アーティストBjarne Bare（ビャーン・ベア）により、ロサンゼルスに新たにオープンした「Nazraeli Showroom」でのこけら落としとなる展覧会にあわせて、Nazraeli Pressより刊行されました。

森山大道によるシリーズ「Shinjuku, Tokyo」と、Avo Tavitianが30年間にわたって撮影を続けてきたロサンゼルスの写真が対峙するように構成されています。

彼らはともに35mmフィルムを用いて日常的な被写体に焦点を当て、その偶然性や予測不可能性を受け入れています。そして混沌とした都市風景への深い関心と、ありふれたものへの探究心をは、それぞれの視界における変化と不変を記録しようとする試みでもあります。両者はカメラを通して、絶えず変化する人間環境の中での「帰属」や「アイデンティティ」の複雑さを探っているようです。

本展覧会では両者のオリジナルプリントに加え、森山大道の写真をテキスタイルに使用した家具の展示、販売もございます。また、この度初お披露目となる2タイトル『Daido Moriyama / How to Tokyo at Night』『Avo Tavitian / Tires of Los Angeles』の販売もございます。写真集とあわせて、ぜひご覧ください。

【プロフィール】

森山大道（Daido Moriyama）
1938年に大阪で生まれた森山大道は、日本の写真界を代表する重要な存在であり、都市の本質を捉える力強いモノクロのストリート写真で広く知られています。キャリアを通じて新宿という街に惹きつけられており、コントラストと粒子の粗い質感を特徴とする、荒々しく即興的なスタイルによる象徴的なイメージは、アイデンティティや記憶、そして日常の儚い瞬間といったテーマを探求しています。

Avo Tavitian（アヴォ・タヴィティアン）
1954年にレバノンのベイルートに生まれたアヴォ・タヴィティアンは、変化し続ける環境との深い関わりの中で写真へと向かいました。1967年の中東戦争後、1960年代後半に家族とともにアメリカ東海岸へ移住した経験が、ニュージャージーやニューヨークで過ごした多感な10代において「外部の者」としての感覚を育みました。この感覚は、1980年代半ばにロサンゼルスへ移住して以降の写真制作にも大きな影響を与えています。

Nazraeli Press（ナツラエリプレス）
1989 年、Chris Pichler（クリス・ピヒラー）によりドイツのミュンヘンにて設立され、1997年にアメリカに移転。出版物のフォーマットはポストカード・サイズから大判のモノグラフに及ぶ。伝統的な製本に加えて、巻物、アクリル製の箱に入ったカード、オリジナル写真が入ったポートフォリオなどのユニークなフォーマットも使用。

POST is pleased to present an exhibition of Avo Tavitian, Daido Moriyama / LOS ANGELES X SHINJUKU, featuring works by renowned Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama and Lebanese-born photographer Avo Tavitian.

Published in late 2024 by Nazraeli Press, this book was released in conjunction with the first exhibition at the newly opened Nazraeli Showroom in Los Angeles, curated by the publisher’s editor and curator Maya Ishiwata and Norwegian artist Bjarne Bare.

The book is composed as a face-to-face encounter between Daido Moriyama’s ongoing series Shinjuku, Tokyo and Avo Tavitian’s photographs of Los Angeles, taken over the course of three decades.

Both artists focus on everyday subjects using 35mm film, embracing the medium’s inherent chance and unpredictability. Their deep fascination with the chaotic urban landscape, combined with a curiosity toward the mundane, reflects an attempt to record both change and continuity within their respective fields of vision. Through their work, both photographers seem to explore the complexities of belonging and identity within an ever-shifting human environment.

This exhibition features original prints by both artists, as well as furniture incorporating Daido Moriyama’s photographs as textiles, available for display and purchase.
In addition, we are pleased to present and offer for sale two titles making their debut: Daido Moriyama / How to Tokyo at Night and Avo Tavitian / Tires of Los Angeles.

Daido Moriyama
Born in Osaka in 1938, Daido Moriyama is a pivotal figure in Japanese photography, widely recognized for his powerful black-and-white street photography that captures the essence of urban life. Throughout his career, he has been drawn to the district of Shinjuku, where his raw and spontaneous style—characterized by high contrast and grainy textures—has produced iconic images exploring themes of identity, memory, and the fleeting moments of everyday life.

Avo Tavitian
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1954, Avo Tavitian turned to photography through a profound engagement with constantly shifting environments. Following the 1967 Middle East war, he moved with his family to the East Coast of the United States in the late 1960s. His formative years in New Jersey and New York fostered a sense of being an outsider—an awareness that has deeply informed his photographic practice since relocating to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s.

Nazraeli Press
Founded in Munich, Germany, in 1989 by Chris Pichler, Nazraeli Press relocated to the United States in 1997. The publisher produces books in a wide range of formats, from postcard-sized editions to large-scale monographs. In addition to traditional bookbinding, Nazraeli is known for its unique formats, including scrolls, acrylic box sets of cards, and portfolios containing original photographs.
